Requirements for International students

Here’s a summary of general application requirements for international students applying to universities in the U.S

Requirement

Description

Application

Each university requires a general application, covering your academic credentials, extracurricular activities, personal goals and aspirations and parent or legal guardian information. Many colleges in the U.S. use the Common Application portal, which allows applicants to apply to a maximum of 20 colleges. Most colleges require an application fee that can range from $25 - $125. Planning to max out on this portal could cost hundreds of dollars. Click here for some colleges that don't require application fees and offer scholarships to international students.

Academic Transcripts

Transcripts showcasing your four years of your high school record.

Letters of Recommendation

Most universities require letters of recommendation from teachers and counselors who can speak to the student's academic abilities and personal qualities.

Personal Statements and Essays

Universities consider the person beyond grades and test scores. The personal statement or college essay allows students to present a more rounded picture of themselves, by highlighting their experiences in and outside the classroom.

Standardized Scores

While many universities no longer require standardized scores (e.g., SAT, ACT), submitting them can still strengthen the application. Many Ivy League and highly selective colleges have reinstated the testing requirement. Click here for a list of universities/colleges that require test scores.

Financial Information

Some universities/colleges request financial information to determine scholarship eligibility. The deadline for financial information might differ from the application deadline. Always check the tabs for international students, followed by the cost or links to scholarships and financial aid. Many private universities that do offer some form of financial assistance to international students will require them to complete a CSS profile form. A Certificate of Finance or some other form of financial declaration form may be required before a visa issued.

Proof of English Language Proficiency

International students from non-English-speaking countries must demonstrate English language proficiency. This can be proven through SAT/ACT English and reading test scores or other language testing preferred. This differs from one school to another and can be verified on the college's website.
